How to Take the Stress Out of Your Long-Distance Move

How to Take the Stress Out of Your Long-Distance Move

A hard truth: planning a long-distance move involves a lot of stress. Luckily, you don’t have to deal with the planning all on your own. At Allen & Coles Moving Systems, we go above and beyond to make every aspect of your relocation simple and stress-free.

As a local Portland long-distance moving company, we know what it takes to get you and your belongings from point A to point B without a hitch. Before we get started, let’s go over a few ways to minimize stress throughout the moving process.

Today, we’re going to talk about how to reduce stress…

…On Yourself

It’s no secret that you’ll be feeling the most amount of stress when it comes to planning a move. However, there are a few things you can do to ease some of the heavy lifting off your shoulders. For starters, you should choose a moving team that you can trust. Hiring high-quality moving company will reduce the chances of things going wrong during the move.

Before you choose your movers, it’s important to assess your wants and needs for your relocation. From there, you can find a team that has all the services you need for your upcoming relocation.

…On Your Kids

When it comes to moving with kids, your initial reaction may be to keep them distracted and away from the action during the process. However, you should do the exact opposite if you’re looking to reduce their stress levels during the move. Here are a few ways to keep your children involved in the process without overwhelming them:

  • Let them pack their own belongings
  • Involve them in every step of the process
  • Communicate openly with them
  • Ask them about their feelings
  • Teach them about the new town

…On Your Pets

Even your pets will feel the stress of a long-distance move. Between all the new people moving in and out of the house, the packing, and the chaotic energy, your pets are bound to feel on edge. Luckily, there are a few ways you can ease their anxiety during the process.

While you’re packing, dedicate a space for all your pets’ belongings, so they have a safe space to escape to while all the craziness is going on. Once you’re in the car, make sure they have a comfortable space to lounge and be sure to take frequent breaks to let them go to the bathroom and get out some energy. Always keep them on a leash just in case they get anxious and try to bolt.

…On Your Plants

Did you know your plants can go into shock? Undergoing a long-distance move can be hard on your houseplants, which is why it’s important to do whatever you can to keep your plants as comfortable and regulated as possible.

Before you head out, transfer any plants that are in ceramic pots into plastic bins and water them thoroughly. This will make them much easier to transport and help you avoid any spills in the car. Once you’re on the road, it’s important to keep the temperature and light levels as consistent as possible. This will help minimize the effects of shock on your plants.

Exceeded Every Expectation

I recently needed to move on short notice. Unfortunately, I live in Downtown Portland on the 3rd floor of a walk-up building. From the initial consultation through scheduling and the actual move, no detail was left unaddressed. My team of Mike and...

When should I schedule my move?

You should start organizing your move 6 weeks prior to your ideal move date. Try and schedule your move during the off-peak season or outside of the months from May-September. Many moving companies will accommodate last-minute moves as well, so don't think that just because you're starting your moving late in the game, it can't be accomplished.
